Introduction

As a wearer in the Masterworks Broach of the Month Club 2010, Jo Mears and partner/BOM maker Sharon felt obliged to take Ross Malcolm's brooch 'In the Pink' on tour with them as they set out on a three week adventure with sixty other kombis around the South Island of New Zealand to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Type II in New Zealand.

Pink days in Nelson and Marlborough

Day Four - Picton to Carol's house in Nelson.  Beautiful drive through McCahonesque hills and vineyards a plenty.  If we had bothered to look at a real map before we set off this morning we would have taken the coastal route. Have discovered that Wanda has the same Left-Right dislexia as Joey. Breakfast by the boats of Havelock. Everyone here is looking at us strangely. We were followed into Havelock by one blue 1967ish beetle - we got quite excited and waved at him but Mr beetle owner was grumpy and non responsive. Weird. Is it because we are pink and purple or are they just grumpy in this area?

Tried to convince Wanda to find her way to New World, gave up, then saw it around the corner from Repco. Camped in Carol's backyard for the next few nights while the Volkswagen Nationals are on down the road in Founders Park.

Day Three: 31 March - Paekakariki to Picton.
Wanda behaves badly today and sends us on swings and roundabouts en route to Lower Hutt.  Pink meets Clare and Bev at the New Dowse and dazzles the lovely lady at reception. Loved the Lisa Walker show (of course) and was quite impressed by Sueng Yul Oh's Bogle Woggle thingies.
Wanda sends us on a few more roundabouts and swings to the Te Papa parking lot. Quick walk to meet the ladies at Avid and drop off some more blobs for Sharons 'Wind Wands and Seismic Indicators' exhibition opening 24 April.  Anna loved Pink and wants Ross to play with them not those other people.
Caught an electric taxi to ArtZone headquaters and a coffee with Craig. Chatted with Mary Newton about a lovely clown with lead balloons. Curiously had 3 conversations about a wayward ponie with a bad paint job today.
Busbus meet a nice Type 25 in the carpark.  A man offerred to buy her on the ferry - no way we said.
Catching up with emails and blog making on the ferry. Camping in Picton tonight.

'In the Pink' hits the road in a purple and white volkswagen kombi

Day One: 29 March - Waimauku to Morrinsville via respective workplaces at Wallace Arts Trust and Manukau School of Visual Arts.

Day Two: 30 March - a few quick meetings in Morrinsville and a pillow purchase from Sharon's mum then we hit the road to Taupo.  Saw our first fellow kombi, a 1972 transitional bay window (early bay front, late bay rear), at the Taupo Museum carpark.  Sharon dropped off some blobs for the Magpie exhibition. Saw some nice ducks. Drove as far as Paekakariki.

Having spent the first 34 years of her life with one old lady and no car radio, busbus is quite impressed by all the technology her two lady companions have plugged into her: a satellite navigation gadget called Wanda, a laptop, digital camera, ipod nano, surround sound stereo system and three cell phones.
Flash as she reckons!
