Introduction

As a wearer in the Masterworks Broach of the Month Club 2010, Jo Mears and partner/BOM maker Sharon felt obliged to take Ross Malcolm's brooch 'In the Pink' on tour with them as they set out on a three week adventure with sixty other kombis around the South Island of New Zealand to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Type II in New Zealand.

The end of the world (island)

The day after yesterday: Pounawea to Bluff
Ventured through the Catlins today which reminded us a lot of the Coromandel. Our first day of drizzley weather - something we might get more of as we head towards Milford Sound as it is a bit stormy over there at the moment. Enjoyed a nice bush walk to a waterfall beginning with P (purakauiti), admired the fern foliage and found a lovely tree with fungi broochi.
Got stuck in a traffic jam near Otara (South Island not South Auckland)
Found an excellent whale mail box near a lost gypsy truck
Found a 170000000 year old tree fossil in some rocks
And some awesome alien seaweed
Joey got a great drive by shot of a squiggly lake and sign
Pink found heaps of sheeps
And went to the end of the world
Flagged staying at the campground in Invercargil because it was horrid, so drove down to Bluff for a cup of tea and a custard square with Keri and Darryl (from the late bay called Mildred)'s mum and dad. She gave us clown faces for dessert. yummo :o)
It is nice to be away from the group for once, but I am also aware that it would quite lonely travelling around having to communicate with total strangers in alien campgrounds every night.  Travelling with 60 - 100 VW freaks is perhaps quite a good thing.
I wore my UHU brooch again today and got the usual "why have you got a tube of glue stuck to your shirt?" reactions. One lady was quite interested in Harriet last night tho and was quite perplexed about Harriet's baggy with 20cents in it.  I think she might have surmised that i was bonkers.
